The Writing Program

The Writing Program at Guilford College is the foundation for all first year students to establish their critical reading and writing skills that are crucial in their coursework, and their work and lives beyond Guilford. Classes include English 101, 102, 101+, 102+ and Historical Perspectives. More than 95% of First Year students take these courses. The Writing Program has just implemented a new "Informed Self-Placement" model which, with guidance and support, allows incoming students to select the first year writing course that best meets their needs. This new model, with close collaboration with the Learning and Writing Center, provides more support for students who want it and gives students more agency and choice to be active participants in their education. These classes teach students the value of storytelling and how they can most effectively make their arguments, skills which are central to preparing our students to be change makers in the world.

When you support the Writing Program, you are making it possible for us to provide the support and resources that students need to be successful, like the following:

• more professional tutors to help in the classroom and in one-on-one tutoring sessions with students
• professional and pedagogy development trainings for Writing Program faculty and staff
• more opportunities for faculty to build engagement and relationships with students outside the classroom
• hard copies of readings so students can focus on their comprehension, close reading, and annotation skills
